Very excited about that my three Piano Quintets are going to be performed at Helsinki Music Centre. My trilogy Woman’s Destiny is a powerful series of three piano quintets inspired by the lives of Minna Canth, Aino Sibelius, and Helene Schjerfbeck. Composed between 2017 and 2020, the trilogy sheds light on the inner worlds of three influential women in Finnish cultural history, each offering a unique expression of womanhood.
Minna portrays the passionate work, challenges of motherhood, and uncompromising societal engagement of a trailblazer of Finnish feminism. Aino dives into the complex emotional world of the composer’s wife — her quiet endurance, inner contradictions, and a deep love that also carried her husband’s art. Helene reveals the fragile strength, solitude, artistic integrity, and lifelong self-examination of visual artist Helene Schjerfbeck.
The quintets will be performed by Linda Suolahti and Anna Husgafvel on violin, Mari Viluksela on viola, Kati Raitinen on cello, Nairi Azezian on flute, Ella York on oboe, Helmi Malmgren on clarinet, Yasuko Matsuzaki-Svala on bassoon and in all three works Tiina Karakorpi on piano. The concert is organised by Kokonainen.
The concert precedes the ensemble’s upcoming studio recording of the trilogy.
My solo cello work Aveo will broadcast in the Finnish Radio Yle 1, performed by Senja Rummukainen at the Kaivos Festival taking place in a former factory in Outokumpu, eastern Finland and with a dance choreography by Katariina Vähäkallio and performed by the students of the Outokumpu Dance School Riveria. The concert will also include music by Giovanni Sollima, Veli Kujala, Chinary Ung and Dmitri Shostakovich. The concert is available world wide 30 days after the airing on demand at Yle Areena.
The recording of my piece Psychedelic, recorded by pianist Reetamaria Rajala on her debut album Silence, will be part of Minna Tervamäki’s new contemporary ballet.
AIR – an evening of two contemporary ballet works focuses on the fundamental element of life, air. Air is everywhere. It permeates everything and moves between us. Air supports and moves us sometimes imperceptibly, sometimes more powerfully. The feeling of airiness and lightness, even the ability to fly, has fascinated people throughout history. Dance often strives for lightness but also accepts its opposite, gravity. Two renowned Finnish choreographers address these themes in their new works.
Choreography: Minna Tervamäki ja Anu Sistonen
Dancers: Vilhelm Bjersér, Mafalda Fideles, Suvi Honkanen, Oskari Kymäläinen, Katariina Luukas, Sofia Repo, Jelizaveta Vorontsova
Sound design: Juho Suominen
Costumes: Susanna Suurla & Suvi Matinaro
Lights: Kalle Paasonen
Photos and videos: Ali Kesanto
Graphic design: Saana Railo
