Program note

Under Stjärnhimlen (Under the Firmament) is a commissioned work for the Grand Chapter of Finland of the Swedish Order of Freemasons.

The Swedish Order of Freemasons’ lodges feature a hall with a starry sky that can be illuminated, and which also allows for the creation of a sunrise in the east. This piece was written specifically for that moment, when the starry sky is lit and gradually transitions into a sunrise. As not all lodges are equipped with a piano, I have also created two alternative arrangements of the piece: one for organ and another for guitar. (The ossia section in the organ version is intended for organs without g3 on the manual.)

The piece serves as a depiction of night turning into morning—a musical evocation of stars shining far away, small yet clear, and of the sun’s immense power as it rises above the horizon, while the last stars gradually fade away.

I received this commission with great joy for many reasons; like so many others, I have always been fascinated by stars. Writing a piece titled Under the Starry Sky felt very natural and intuitive. Moreover, it is a tremendous honour to compose for the Freemasons, whose previous associated composers include such names as Sibelius, Haydn, and Mozart.

The piece premiered on February 3, 2015, performed on the piano by the composer herself in the Helsinki lodge of the Grand Chapter of Finland of the Swedish Order of Freemasons, before a full audience.
